…and I thought there was nothing as contagious as a smile!

C (Customer): Do you sell smiles?
SK (shopkeeper): Yes. But they’re quite costly.
C: Ah, not a problem! Please give a box of them to that lady there; it’s on me!
SK: Oh, sorry! You’re not the first to try…but I never have any that fits her!

So, does a smile cost a lot, really? Or, is it just a matter of no-size-fits-some?

Been wondering about this for a while now. There is this neighbour of mine, at whom I’ve smiled a million times — without fail, everytime, she turns around and hurries into her house.

Either its my buck teeth which she isn’t too impressed with; or her smiles are damn expensive and she knows I cannot afford one ever in my life!

Well, I’ve never bitched about her on her face (not even to other neighbours), never made faces at her, never tried to flirt with her husband, never tried to make her kid shoot her with his plastic gun…so I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why I get such a cold response to one little, innocent smile.

It’s been 9 months, now. But well, irrespective of all that, I still smile at her every single time.Β  It’s a simple principle I follow: It’s always there, right under my nose, and it costs me nothing! So, why forget it’s there?? Well, I believe there’s always a smile at the end of a 14-muscle stretch! πŸ˜‰

.

P.S.: Well, to those whom it matters: I do not have buck teeth — I smiled at my maid’s kid today and she didn’t look scared…not a bit!)

  1. I know what you mean…
There’s a guy in my office who doesn’t ever return a smile. I always bump into him in the hallway and when our eyes meet, I smile. It’s kind of like a reflex action. But he’s like this rock, dead as ever. I told my colleagues about it, they said he never returns their smiles too, thinks no one deserves it! Strange!

  2. Some people are perpetually on the defense, and normal conversation for them is always adversarial. Those poor souls seem incapable of functioning in public without being offended by everyday people.
    Okay, who am I kidding.
    The wife.
She can be hard to live with.

    Ain’t love strange?

  3. Its funny.. i read “not a bit” and instantly think of the joker…

anyway, keep smiling i guess, she’s bound to repay even if after many years.. it’ll be worth it then i guess.. or maybe she has a jaw problem and can’t smile.. xL

  9. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Smile is the only curver that sets things straight… I always have one on my face.. and sumtimes ppl just get irritated and frustated to see me smiling everytime..

And lol.. were the girls who said u look good with the dimple when u smile..lied all the time??

  10. @ALL: I think she read the blog; haven’t seen her outside since I posted this! πŸ˜€ Guess she’s getting a plastic surgery done for a permanently smiling face πŸ˜‰
The power of blogging, I tell you! πŸ˜€

  11. Lol…yeah some people are very stingy when it comes to giving smiles. A person at my workplace is like that! By the way, even if you did have buck teeth, there’s no reason for someone not to smile back. One of my lecturers had the most imperfect teeth…crooked and all…but she was always smiling and could light up the room. She tried teaching us that as well. πŸ˜€ FYI, I have bunny teeth! πŸ˜›
