“I’m an open blog…er er…open book”

It sometimes surprises me how much of an open ‘book’ we all are through our blogs. I’m sure if I meet most of the people in my blog roll, there’s at least one thing I know about them which does not fall into categories like “Where’s his native place”, “Where’s she working”, “Is she from Delhi”, “Is he married”, and so on.

There’s so much that’s shared on a blog: in the form of tags (am sure they were invented by a stalker ;)), memories, feelings, incidents, rants, and what not!

I remember an age when we were asked not to put up our pics on the Internet (for fear of misuse); not to put up personal info about ourselves (now, personal info is just bank account number and the like); not to trust people you see online (20/F/Delhi may very well be 75/M/Uganda); not to correspond with people who write personal mails to you, if you don’t really know them personally. All bleh!

I guess, especially for bloggers, there’s no fear of being open about themselves. When you blog, you’re being yourselves. Your readers have different opinions, perspectives, ideas; they may not always agree with you, and they are open about that too!

When we read something about a person on a blog, like a tag on his/her fav 10 eatables, 3 fav dresses, or 5 fav movies/songs, we just tend to believe it and relate those things with that person. We don’t question it, or doubt its
authenticity. Somehow, hypocrisy seems to hit a firewall when a blog is opened 😀

Just the other day, I got a mail from Uma, based on a comment I had put in her blog. She wanted to know a few details about taking up literature (for her daughter’s higher edu). One mail turned into a thread of 5 or 6..and finally she said “the speed of thought is so much more. we can talk in person” and we exchanged mobile numbers!! (Damn! That reminds me, I haven’t called her up yet. I will, Uma; today, for sure ;))

I will not sit and wonder if this “Uma, mother of two girls” is actually a 50-year old stalker looking forward to whisper indecencies over the phone! 😀 In fact, if anything, we both felt real good to be actually writing long mails to each other, like we’ve known each other for the past 300 years! 😀

Apart from letting us be our true self (and not worry what others will think), blogging does a lot to all of us: though we don’t realise it much. It tells us a lot about perspectives, cultures, current affairs (and people’s views on them), likes, dislikes, trends, cities, beliefs, and what not!
What do you all feel? Is there an inherent danger in being so open to the world? Do you think some disaster could come out of it? Do you think someone could take advantage of you after figuring out the kind of person you are? Do you think it’s not the best thing to be such an “open book”?

I, let me admit, don’t. Here’s to all the lovely bloggers…and their even lovelier blogs! You all make life much more fun 😀

  1. I should be the open-est blogger; I even have snaps of my entire family in the blog !! 😀 😀 😀 😀

I wouldnt say its bad, but a certain amount of anonymity is necessary, I feel. I had never been able to do that and now its too late. But I do have plans to password protect a few of my posts 😀 😀 😀

    • The certain amount of annonymity is always followed. Like, I don’t write posts about when I leave home in the morning or reach at evening/night; where i keep the keys to the doors; which lonely 15-minute stretch of road I cross to reach home after 7, etc. etc. (i take an auto ;))
All i’m saying is that we are much much much more open through blogs than we are otherwise…
You, should perhaps password protect all your posts: most are not to be read by sane people 😛

  2. I am for sure can say I am more open in blog where I am sharing something about me which I won’t do in real life easily… and what you said is right… we are being ourselves here and surely tags make us to reveal more… and I love tags…. they make us to relive those moments we enjoyed… isn’t it???

    I won’t believe a person if I know through some social netwoking sites… but blogging is different… 😀 😀 I love it…

  3. Hey that’s the very nice thought to ponder upon. Lets take the example of an anonymous DIL,who wrote that famous long mail to IHM,just to share her problems, griefs she was facing in her newly married life. It wouldn’t have possible for her to be so open and honest with her feelings if she was using her own identity for sharing her problems. And that’s why i believe some anonymity is important 🙂 which gives a person the desired freedom !

    • Yes, true; but if she were actually more open ad straightforward, she would be solving a big part of her problems; she might not exactly make a best buddy out of her MIL, but that’s not going to do her much harm 😉
Again, am sure she could detail out her problems so well because she was addressing a blogger. Would she do that the same way on a Yahoo forum? i doubt it!

    • Hahahaha… I don’t think much will happen; they’ll know the ‘real’ you. And if it’s way too different from the person they’v known so far, they’ll wish you were all more open with each other 😉 😉

  5. OMG I agree with every word in this post here. I wish my friends could read this. They always ask me how I can trust my blog friends so easily, and a lot of people judge me because I’m so open about my life. But it’s so easy to trust, be open, be true. A blog is a reflection of a person’s train of thought, his/her views – who can be fake at that ALL the time?

We just KNOW who we should trust, it’s all instinct-based!

This is just another medium of getting to know people and like all other media, it comes with a share of risks (which, as per me, are worth taking if they mean getting to know some of the most wonderful bloggers such as you!)

    Superb post! 😉

  6. I am just staring at these words – 50-year old stalker looking forward to whisper indecencies over the phone !!!! LOL, it was wonderful writing to you and reading your lovely long mails. I even made my daughter read it and I’ve to tell you that she is throughly impressed with you. 🙂

For me, I follow my gut instinct and intuitions to share mails or mobile numbers and I’ve never been wrong so far.

Yes, even though the blog says a lot abt the person, possibilities of wrong info is always possible. But so far, I’ve met such wonderful ppl that I really think that all is goody good.

I love the network which we have created thru blogs, and continuing them in FB, Twitter and so on…it gives the whole friendship a new meaning. I love blogging and the friends I get through this. 🙂

  7. when you make something public there’s always that danger the information can be misused. it’s just like going out of the house, there’s no guarantee for your personal safety. does that mean you stop going out of the house? heck, being at home has its own dangers too! just as long as we take some necessary precautions and try to think of the consequences of our actions before we act on them, you can be as open as you wish to be.

i don’t reveal this persona i use to most of the people i know in real life, so there’s always that danger that they may stumble upon my personal blog. if they do, so be it. other than that, i think it’s more dangerous if i am the opposite of an open book. when i am by myself too much i tend to brood and think really silly things sometimes!

    • Yup. There’s a flip side to almost every single thing! The good part about blogging is that it’s tough for a person to maintain a fake character for too long, consistently. Somewhere, he/she will slip. Probably that’s why it’s easier to trust a blogger you’re following for sometime; than a random person on Twitter/Facebook/etc. May be possible to be fake in 140 chracters…but in paragraph-long posts? A wee bit tough! 🙂

  8. Wow, what a word!
You know, people are different in terms of emotion. Some are easily hurt ;some as tough as stone. But as a humanbeing we have some common fundamental needs. For example, We all need love, the love from family, friends , beloved and teachers. This is the very strength you have . So, just dont worry about any danger, just be an open book for ever.

    Dangerously yours

  9. You know I am basically a trusting person but afetr some experiences I take everything that’s written with a pinch of salt. Often I have realised that there is a huge difference between the blgo personality & reality. But then I also have to thank blogs for giving some of the most wonderful frenz to me 🙂

P.S. Today I realised that in between ur various blog breaks I had stopped following you hehehe 🙂

    • I know what you mean. I nursed such a hurt for quite a while too. But life, finally, gives you what you really want from it. I decided the ‘pinch of salt’ was not the best option around 😉

😥 Please put me back in your roll 😀 I’m here to stay 🙂

  10. Agree with Smita here. I am quite suspicious of net and the virtual friends. Most of the time offline personalities are very diff from online ones. I have personally seen a reticent introvert behave like a casanova on the blogs. I have seen people behave like feminist while doing nothing in real life.
So, if you ask me frankly, I would say be careful over the net!

    Like

    • In fact, I’d say we should be super careful when dealing with people directly!! Yes, typical case of once-bitten-twice-shy! 😀
Somehow, I’ve so far been able to trust bloggers…and haven’t been bitten at all 😀

True. I Don’t like ads either, in a blogspace.

Btw, tried commenting at your blog, but gave error multiple times.
So, here’s what I wanted to say on “The Flying Fantasy”:
“Thanks for dropping by my blog. Led me here, and i must say you have wonderful posts and even better photographs here!
Esp loved the post n pics in ‘The Arteries Of Life’. Love this post as well.
Amazing. Clouds and trees fascinate me! 🙂
      Blog-rolling you :)”

  11. I happened to stumble upon your blog through Anubha’s blog and find it really cool and interesting ! Keep up the good work and more importantly keep blogging !
About this post I just went down the memory lane when I read “(20/F/Delhi may very well be 75/M/Uganda)” … Lol ! That is funny ! I still remember those younger years when I was still new to the internet and happen to have like 100s of online friends on Yahoo, ICQ, MSN etc etc … Some of those, as you put with a complete different profile as compared to what they really were :)))

Nevertheless, I agree to your post here, that Blogosphere is an entirely different medium of expressing “openly” your thoughts, sharing your views and more importantly spending some self time alone !

    Cheers
