Today, the 10-day-long Onam celebrations start. Today is “Atham” nakshathram.
This is ‘technically’ our first Onam after my wedding (actually, it was last year, but my grandma had passed away and we did not get to celebrate it last year). To add to that, Amma is here too. And she’s always super enthu about all these things. So, we decided to celebrate it well. And the start is always with the daily pookkalam (flower carpet).
Yesterday. close to midnight, we went about our street in search of flowers. It’s most fun to ‘steal’ flowers for the pookkalam: that’s THE way to design one π So, we went about, stole some, got scared by a few dogs and came back. Planned to wake up early for more flower hunting. But well, you all know I cannot sacrifice sleep π So, while I snored away, Amma went about, collected more flowers and then woke me up.
And then, like ooooold times, we sat together and spread out the most amateurish flower carpet (the last time we made a pookkalam is while I was in Std 12). But well, as the days go on, we’ll get good at it π Come Thiruvonam, and we’ll be super-duper pookkalam designers π π π π π
This is our amateurish Day 1 pookkalam. I will torture you all for the next 10 days with such pics π π π
looks very cool..

Whooppiieee, a pookkalam for the next 10 days !! π π π
You are right; for Onam, we are supposed to steal the flowers, there is no fun in buying them ! Thats what our ancestors taught us !! π π π
The one above is good, but from where did you get the cowdung ? (now, dont say its from a cow, I know that! :D)

Yea. Delightful teachings, aint they!? π
Lol. Of course not! Got it from a buffalo π It’s buffalo dung. π Hehe…well, there is this herd of 20-25 buffalos that pass through the street next to ours π Went there and cleande that road. Am sure the residents were staring at Amma incredulously. OR maybe they thought it was Gandhi Jayanthi π π π π Coz she swept the place of its buffalo dung and the flowers that were ‘littering’ the road π
